Two degrees off from where you actually meant to be.

There’s a version of what you want that lives a few floors below what you actually say out loud.


And you know what - you’ve gotten very good at editing - adusting.


By the time a want reaches your mouth it’s been through several rounds, ‘is this reasonable, will this land badly, what will they think, is this too much, is this selfish, can I justify this.’ You know the drill. The original thing is still in there somewhere. But what comes out is smaller, safer and more palatable.


I bet you probably don’t even notice you’re doing it anymore. It’s become the speed of thought.


You might think it’s about ambition but it’s not. The people I’m describing are often extraordinarily ambitious. They build things, lead things, push hard for things.


But underneath the ambition there’s a quieter layer. And in that layer, the actual wanting has been managed so carefully for so long that it’s become almost inaccessible.


It’s not gone. It’s just - very well behaved.

The cost isn’t dramatic. It rarely announces itself. It’s the accumulation of slightly wrong jobs that were close enough. Slightly unfulfilling relationships that were easier than asking for what was actually needed. Conversations that could have gone somewhere real and didn’t, because the what I call, ‘the edit’ happened before the words did.


And a vague sense that’s hard to locate exactly, and easy to dismiss that your life is being lived about two degrees off from what you actually meant.


I’ve watched this pattern in executives who run departments of hundreds. In founders who have built genuinely impressive things. In people who, by every external measure, are succeeding.


They’re not suffering dramatically. That’s partly what makes it so hard to name.

It’s the flatness that wasn’t there five years ago. The sense of going through the right motions in the right order and arriving somewhere that should feel like enough and quietly doesn’t.


When I ask them what they actually want and not what they’re working toward, not what makes sense given the circumstances - most of them pause for a long time.

Not because they don’t know.


Because they haven’t been asked in a while. And the question lands somewhere the rest of the conversation hasn’t reached.


The pattern usually starts early.


Wanting things openly as a child, as a teenager that produced some kind of cost, disappointment and conflict. The label of being too much, too needy, too demanding. Or simply: the want wasn’t met enough times that the nervous system learned to stop leading with it.


So the edit got installed. Quietly, efficiently, for genuinely good reasons.


The problem is it doesn’t retire when the original conditions are gone. It just keeps running. Intercepting wants before they surface. Translating them into something more acceptable. Delivering a version of you to the world that is easier to be around and further from what you actually need.


This is not a mindset problem.

You can’t think your way out of a nervous system pattern. 

You can understand it completely, trace it back to its origin, name it accurately in therapy and still feel the edit happen automatically the next time you’re about to ask for something real.


The pattern lives below the level of conscious thought. Which is why conscious thought alone doesn’t move it.


What does move it is contact. Noticing the edit happening in real time. Feeling where the want lives in the body before it gets translated. Learning - slowly, in small increments that the original wanting is not the problem.


It never was.
